Free-to-play gaming has been a hugely successful model. The companies offer tons of different things through item shops or other forms of microtransactions. That's how they make their money and allow players on conoles, PC, and mobile devices to play with no base charge for their games. 10 – Destiny 2
Destiny 2 originally cost the standard $60 price. Now, it is under the free-to-play model. The game is an online-only multiplayer first-person shooter. There are an assortment of crazy missions for players to go on with friends, sharing experiences that are out of this world.
9 - Valorant
Valorant is another free-to-play first-person shooter. Made by Riot Games, it has quickly become a premier esports title. Players choose from a number of Agents with different abilities. One side attacks and tries to plant a bomb called the Spike while the other side tries to prevent it, much like CS:GO.
8 – Dota 2
Dota 2 is a fantastic MOBA that actually came along as a sequel to a community-created mod within Warcraft III named Defense of the Ancients. Two teams of five compete against each other, trying to destroy the other teams structure known as the “Ancient.” Currently, it has 119 playable heroes.
7 – Star Wars: The Old Republic
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a free-to-play MMORPG based in, of course, the Star Wars universe. Set 300 years after the award-winning Knights of the Old Republic, this game allows players to live out their Star Wars fantasies. From the Jedi and Sith to Bounty Hunters or Smugglers, the choices are plenty.
6 – Apex Legends
Apex Legends is a battle royale game that sees different “Legends” with a variety of abilities fight to become the Champion. Typically played in a three squad mode, Apex Legends spawned from the remains of the Titanfall franchise, set in the same universe. Weapons and even some gameplay elements have successfully transitioned over.
5 - Hearthstone
Hearthstone is an online digital trading card game. It builds upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series by using the same characters, relics, and elements. Players take turns using their 30 card deck along with a hero. The goal is to summon minions and play abilities that destroy the opponent's hero.
4 - Fortnite
Fortnite is still massive in 2020. The free-to-play battle royale has a rabidly loyal fanbase. Players drop onto the island, loot up, and fight to be the last person or squad standing in order to achieve the Victory Royale. This game truly ushered in the BR genre and it's building mechanics are still unique to this day.
3 – Call of Duty: Warzone
Another free-to-play battle royale game is Call of Duty: Warzone. Spun off from Modern Warfare in order to take advantage of the successful genre, COD: Warzone is spectacular. Players drop into Verdansk and fight in out in that classic COD style. The game even has a “Gulag” feature which allows players to fight their way back to the battlefield after being eliminated.

Rocket League has recently become free-to-play. Once it did, it quickly surpassed CS:GO concurrent player peak. The rocket car soccer game was already extremely popular, but now free-to-play on consoles and through the Epic Games Store on PC, it is a brand new beast.
